Packing for storage can be surprisingly time-consuming, but it’s worth doing properly so your belongings stay safe and easy to find. Smart packing means fewer broken items, easier access, and less stress later.
Start by choosing strong boxes that are roughly the same size. This makes them easier to stack securely and reduces wasted space. Weak or mismatched boxes can collapse under weight, damaging whatever is inside. If you have especially heavy items, like books or kitchenware, go for smaller boxes so they stay manageable when full.
When packing, fill every box completely to avoid gaps. A half-empty box will crumple if you put another box on top, which can lead to crushed items. Use towels, blankets, or packing paper to fill voids and stop things from shifting during transport. Fragile items need extra protection. Wrap them individually in bubble wrap or newspaper, and mark the boxes clearly so you know to handle them carefully when loading your storage unit.
Furniture deserves some attention too. Where possible, disassemble larger items like tables or bed frames to save space. Wrap wooden or metal surfaces with blankets to prevent scratches and dents. Keep screws and bolts in a labelled bag taped to the item so you can easily reassemble it later.
Think about accessibility as you pack. Place things you’ll need more often in boxes that are clearly marked and easy to reach. Seasonal gear, spare furniture, or things you rarely use can go at the back. A little extra thought about what you might need mid-storage will save you from a big unpacking session later.
Packing may not be the most glamorous part of the moving process, but it’s the part that keeps your stuff safe. Take the time to do it right and you’ll thank yourself when everything comes out of storage in perfect condition.
